As many of you have most likely heard, the CPSC has declared a caution to parents and how they manage their newborns in their baby sling. |A little over a week ago, the CPSC released a notice for parents to use caution while handling their newborns in baby slings.

The Consumer Products Safety Commission urged caregivers to "be cautious when using infant slings for babies younger than four months of age." It also urged parents of preemies, twins, babies in fragile health and those of low weights to use increased care and consult their pediatricians about utilizing slings. "We know of too many deaths in these slings and we now know the hazard scenarios for very small babies," said CPSC chair Inez Tenenbaum.

The CPSC is investigating around 14 fatalities over the past 20 years associated with sling-style child carriers, including three deaths from 2009. Twelve of the fatalities involved babies younger than 4 months of age. The vast majority of these deaths involved a low birth weight twin, breathing issues, or were born prematurely.

Slings can pose 2 different types of suffocation hazards to infants. In the first few months of life, infants tend to lose control of their heads because their neck muscles are not yet fully developed. The baby sling carrier fabric is known to clog the infant's airways, finally suffocating them within a minute or two. Also, keeping your child in a curled position is asking for trouble. This blocks the airway by bending the chin onto their chest and can limit the oxygen supply. Children have been known to suffocate this way as they are not able to cry for help. The CPSC has recommended that parents and caregivers make sure the baby's face is not covered and may be seen at all times to the sling's wearer. In short, please be careful before using your baby sling and read the directions!
